Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Attend non-emergency scene
  • Position ambulance vehicle to facilitate access and departure while keeping safe all personnel and the vehicle
  • Identify hazards, real or potential, where there are risks to participants or bystanders
  • Identify and maintain lines of communication with others according to organisation policy and procedures
  • Observe correct communication procedures in accordance with organisation policy and procedures
       
Element: Take appropriate measures to ensure safety at the scene
  • Position ambulance vehicle to protect self, partner and client(s)
  • Wear personal protective clothing in accordance with operating procedures
  • Utilise Ambulance resources and improvise as required to secure the scene
  • Undertake appropriate roles as prescribed by Acts, regulations, organisation policy and procedure
  • Minimise risk by enlisting hazard reduction agents to enable provision of treatment in hazard-free (or hazard-reduced) environment
  • Ensure action is in accordance with standard local ambulance operation procedure
       
Element: Represent and promote public safety issues
  • Represent the organisation's position on particular issues in a way that acknowledges community concerns and promotes community awareness
  • Use opportunities to explain and promote the organisation's activities and to enhance the organisation's public image
  • Respond to community requests for information or participation to line with organisation policies and procedures
  • Refer non-routine requests for information to an appropriate person
  • Advise the community of a range of prevention and mitigation techniques
  • Inform and skill community members to implement prevention and mitigation activities
  • Assist the community to initiate, develop and conduct prevention and mitigation techniques addressing their own particular needs

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate this competency unit:

The individual being assessed must provide evidence of specified essential knowledge as well as skills

Evidence must include observation of performance in the workplace or in a simulated work situation

Where, for reasons of safety, assessment takes place away from the workplace, simulations should be used to represent workplace conditions as closely as possible.

Evidence must include demonstration over a period of time to ensure consistency of performance.

Access and equity considerations:

All workers in the health industry should be aware of access and equity issues in relation to their own area of work

All workers should develop their ability to work in a culturally diverse environment

In recognition of particular health issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, workers should be aware of cultural, historical and current issues impacting on health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Assessors and trainers must take into account relevant access and equity issues, in particular relating to factors impacting on health of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities
